Basics of Smart mobile cell phones

What is IP rating? IP67 and IP68 meaning explained.

How waterproof are phones today? Technically no phones are actually waterproof but only water resistant. Waterproof means that no water will enter it regardless of how long it is dipped in water. On the other hand, water-resistant means that it can resist the entry of water for a specified period of time, after which water may enter.

As per International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which lays down the Standards for water resistance and many other standards, the IP rating means the following:

IP stands for "Ingress Protection''. 'Ingress' means 'going in' or 'entering'. So IP means protection against ‘entry of’. The numbers following the IP initials stand for the class of protection as defined by the particular Standard. IP 67 and 68 refers to the entry of water and dust into electrical enclosures, which has now been extended to include enclosures of mobile telephones. IP67 and IP68 are therefore defined to have the following meaning:

IP67: means a phone can withstand immersion in water to a depth of up to 1 meter for a maximum 30 minutes.

IP68: means a phone can withstand immersion in water to a depth of up to 1.5 meters for a maximum 30 minutes.

It should be noted that the IEC IP67 and IP68 ratings refers to phone protection in fresh water only and not against any other liquids, including Sea or other chemically contaminated water.

What to do if phone gets wet in rain or phone falls into water?

If a phone gets wet or falls into water, the first thing to do is to get the phone into a dry place and switch off the phone and remove any protective cover or case. Then dry the phone with a cloth or napkin. Now remove the SIM tray and gently shake any water out of the speakers, charging port, headphone jack and SIM tray opening. If possible use a Vacuum cleaner to Vacuum thoroughly these openings on the phone and the area where the phone screen meets the side of the phone.

Now don't try to dry the phone in a Microwave or any oven or use a hair dryer. These will heat the phone and could force water vapours into the phone, which will later condense inside the phone, causing short circuit and corrosion. The best thing to do now is to put the phone in a Zipper bag and fill it with small Silica Gel sachets. If no Silica Gel is available, then put the phone in the Zipper bag with some dry uncooked rice grains. Rice is a good absorbent of moisture. Sometimes the rice grains may already be saturated with moisture, so it will be a good idea to take about 2 cups of the rice grains and microwave it at high heat for about 20 seconds and spread the rice in a plate to cool it down a bit and place it with the wet phone in a Zipper bag. In case there is no Microwave oven, other options are to dry the rice grains with a blow dryer, or use a preheated oven at about 100 degrees C (220 degrees F).

As a first aid measure it is always advisable to have some silica gel sachets in the house. Silica gel sachets are cheap and available on Amazon. See Silica Gel Sachets on Amazon India and Silica Gel Sachets on Amazon USA.

Dedicated bags for drying phones are available on Amazon. They are cheap costing as low as Rs. 120 each in Amazon India and from about $5- on Amazon USA. It is a good idea to have one or two of these bags with you all the time. After all, the phone is one of your most valuable gadgets and companion you carry around all the time. It will not be a waste of money if you keep a first aid kit for your precious phone.

The phone may work as soon as you dry it, but later on it may end up having internal corrosion due to water vapour ingression. So a silica gel drying treatment for the phone is a good treatment for any wet phone.
